Asphalt & Bitumen Testing Services

UMLAB Sarawak carries out asphalt and bitumen testing for pavement construction and maintenance projects, from premix core sampling and mix verification to field checks during paving, backed by proven pavement and Cold In-Place Recycling expertise brought over from our parent laboratory's highway project experience.

What We Test

01 / 08

Premix Core Sampling

Extracting cylindrical cores from a paved surface to check layer thickness, density, and mix composition against the design.

02 / 08

Thickness of Core Measurement

Measuring the depth of each asphalt layer from an extracted core to confirm it matches the paving design.

03 / 08

Bitumen Spray Test (Rate of Spread)

Checks that a prime or tack coat sprayer is applying bitumen at the correct application rate before an asphalt layer is laid.

04 / 08

Bitumen Extraction & Grading

Recovers the bitumen binder from an asphalt sample to verify its grade and the aggregate gradation of the mix.

05 / 08

Marshall Density & Stability

Compacts and loads a lab-prepared asphalt specimen to determine its density and resistance to plastic deformation under traffic loading.

06 / 08

Bitumen Penetration & Softening

Standard tests grading bitumen's hardness (penetration) and the temperature at which it softens, used to select the right binder grade for local conditions. See our penetration and softening point guide.

07 / 08

Skid Resistance (BPN)

Measures a road surface's skid resistance with a pendulum tester, reported as a British Pendulum Number, to assess safety under wet braking. See our skid resistance and texture depth guide.

08 / 08

Sand Patching (Texture Depth)

A volumetric field test that estimates a pavement surface's macrotexture depth, which affects skid resistance and tyre noise. See our skid resistance and texture depth guide.

Standards & Reporting

Testing follows Malaysian JKR specifications and standard geotechnical test methods. Final test reports are endorsed by a Professional Engineer (PEPC).
